Information

‘Late Afternoon, Summer 2018’ shows the Founder’s Building on campus at Royal Holloway, University of London in Egham, Surrey. The Grade 1 listed building is captured by Martin as it appears on a gloriously bright sunny day. His use of pastel shows how the red bricks appear to glow in the warm sunlight.

Royal Holloway began collecting works by leading artists in the nineteenth century, with Thomas Holloway’s founding gift of 77 contemporary paintings, which included works by Millais, Frith and Landseer. Since then, the College has continued to acquire works by important British artists such as Augustus John and Graham Sutherland. With the acquisition of Martin’s work, we are delighted to add to our collections another significant British artist.
